PEOPLE SOUTH SALINAS Walker has a love for birds By MONA SLOAN For The Salinas Californian Dana Walker's love of birds has spanned more than 30 years. Walker has been breeding canaries since 1972. A mend of mine gave me a couple of canaries many years ago, and it just took off from there," she said. "My husband, Jim, built an aviary in our back yard and over the years has expanded it to run the length of our house. At the present time it is home to approximately 140 birds.' Walker breeds birds for color. "The canaries I raise are white, cinnamon, yellow and green which is my favorite, she said. Walker's birds are color-banded and their family history is recorded. Some of her birds have histories dating back 15 years, which is important to the local pet stores and bird lovers she sells to. She likes to joke that her husband learned to cook out of necessity. "At one time I had 125 babies, not to mention all their relatives," Walker said. "It's a lot of work, and that's why my husband has evolved into a gourmet cook." II r In .mi-. Dana Walker
