Friday, February 6, 2004 Californian GREENFIELD Alfred Silvio Tavernetti Alfred Silvio Tavernetti, 80, of Greenfield, died Monday, Feb. 2, 2004, at his daughter's home in King City, following a brief illness. He was born March 31, 1923, on a ranch out- Alfred Silvio Tavernetti side of Chualar. He was raised most of his life in Greenfield. His mother and brother passed away in a fire in 1938.

This started the movement for the establishment of the Greenfield Fire Department. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1940. He served on many ships and received a good conduct medal and the medal of victory. He was reassigned to removing leftover mines.

After the victory of World War II, he attended the Naval Mine Warfare School in Yorktown, Va. He received an honorable discharge with the rank of coxswain from the Navy on Jan. 10, 1946. He attended the Institute of On-Farming Training for veterans. He received his high school diploma after he returned from the war.

He was a school bus driver and custodian for 30 years with the Greenfield school district. He married Yvonne Bergeron in 1957. They were married for 46 years. His hobbies included worrying, about his children, woodworking, music (he loved to play the accordion), old Western and war movies, hanging out with the boys at the coffee shop swapping stories and gardening. He loved animals, especially.

his three cats. His times were spent with his family and friends. He loved his family dearly as he showed them in so many ways every day. Military: U.S. Navy.

Memberships: Lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Greenfield American Legion, where he held several posts. He was also a member of Silver Kings and Queens. Survivors: Sons, Danny Tavernetti, Bobby Tavernetti, both of Greenfield, and Marvin Tavernetti of Arroyo Seco; daughters, Linda Brown of King City and Cindy Tavernetti of Arroyo Seco; brother, John Tavernetti of Greenfield; sister, Betty Young of Castro Valley; granddaughter, Emily Tavernetti of Arroyo Seco; and stepgrandchildren, Alex Brown and Melissa Brown, both of King City. Robert J. McKenna dies Los Angeles Times Dr. Robert J. McKenna, a surgical oncologist who had served as president of the American Cancer Society, has died. He was 78.

Rianda, 81, of Soledad, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004, at Arroyo Seco Road, following an accident. He was born Jan. 21, 1923, in Soledad. He resided in 1 Mission District, Soledad.

He Milton S. Rianda He was selfemployed and in business for more than 50 years with his brothers, farming as Rianda Bros. As a member of the Conservation District movement in the state, he was instrumental in seeing that Monterey County, and a good part of California, became stewards of the land and understood resource, water and flood issues. He was an avid reader of non-fiction, especially about California and Monterey County, his lifelong home. He was a great husband, brother, son and friend.

He was the best dad. Memberships: Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Foresters, Sirs, Knights of Columbus, member and past president of Mission District School Board, Soledad Mission Restoration Committee, 4H Leader, Farm Bureau Association, Charter member of the Gonzales Young Farmers, Water Resource Board and various other Soil Water Conservation organization. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Lynn; brothers, Sammy, Leroy and Emile (Butch); and parents, Sam and Valentina Rianda. Survivors: Wife of 54 years, Norma G. Rianda; daughters, Janet (Mike Goodwin) Rianda and Anne Rianda; stepmother, Maria Rianda; brother, Elmer Rianda; and numerous relatives in California and Switzerland.

In 1943, she decided that Salinas would become her home, where she would raise a family of nine children by working in the packing sheds of this valley. During World War II, she worked for Key System in Oakland to San Francisco as a ticket-taker and sometimes as a conductor.

She was very active in AA for over 40 years. She helped establish the first Alanon Group in Salinas. She managed and ran the Alano Club for two or three years when it first opened on Market Street. She was an avid hunter, fisher and rockhound. Above all, she enjoyed spending time with her family.

Everyone that knew her loved her. She will be missed greatly. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest 'Tiny' Thompson; four sons, Bert Thompson, Ernest Thompson, Richard Thompson and Leon Thompson; and daughter, Betty Lydia. Military: He Thomas H. Timas Thomas H. died Wednesday, Thomas H. Timas served in the U.S. Army as a sergeant 1st class E7 for 23 years.

His tours included Germany, Korea and Vietnam, where he received the Army Occupation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Good Conduct Medal, before his retirement in 1973. Warren Zimmermann dies The Washington Post Warren Zimmermann, the last U.S. ambassador to Yugoslavia who was recalled from Belgrade in 1992 to protest Serbian aggression in the former Yugoslav republic of Bosnia-Herzegovina, died of pancreatic cancer Tuesday at his home in Great Falls, Va. He was 69. Zimmermann was a 33-year Foreign Service officer, an author and a professor. In his diplomatic career, he had also served in Paris, Moscow and Caracas.

Carmen M. Gauna Carmen M. Gauna, 89, of Salinas, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004, at her home, following an illness. She was born Aug.

27, 1914, in Savinal, Texas. She lived in Salinas since 1966. She was a Carmen M. Gauna homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Pedro Gauna.
