The administrative juggling was not a surprise to some observers, who said Chiquita purchased Fresh Express to broaden its product line beyond bananas.

"When you deal with the Wal-Marts and the Krogers, the more you can offer them, the more they like to deal you," said John Inman, a Salinas agricultural consultant. Drever cites personal reasons Drever, 48, said Chiquita wanted all of the original management to stay when the company first announced Feb. 23 it would buy Salinas-based Fresh Express from Performance Food Group. He said he initiated the change for personal reasons and will be able to take some time off. "I've gone at this hard for 17 years," Drever said.

"It's a very good time in the company's history for me to go to do this." Viviani will oversee most of the same Fresh Express management team, who will have additional responsibilities, according to a statement from Chiquita. With Viviani's marketing background, the company might be ready to go head to head with Dole Food Co. in the value-added salad business, where Fresh Express is already one of the leaders. "Chiquita people realize (they're) out there competing with Dole," Inman said. "Maybe they'll do things a little differently than Fresh Express did.

We can't say that things are necessarily bad for the Salinas Valley. It's going to be an interesting scenario." Although it's too early to tell what this shakeup means for the Salinas Valley agricultural industry, some local experts said they are intrigued by it. "I don't know whether it's good or bad," said Bob Perkins, executive director of the Monterey County Farm Bureau. "I'm sure people's first reaction is 'This can't be too but we'll see."
