ATASCADERO Joy Kupstas Joy Kupstas, 59, of Atascadero, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2003. She was raised in Atascadero and had lived in Salinas from 1965 to 1995, moving back to Atascadero to be with her sister whose husband had died. She worked for many years as a bartender in Atascadero and Salinas, including the Elks Lodge and Rodeo Inn in Salinas and Terry's in Atascadero. She worked for the past seven years at Club Soda.

She was involved with the El Camino Pool League and Toys for Tots for several years. Survivors: Daughters, Sherri (John) Heaton, Cindy Gee and Sandra Smith, all of Sacramento; son, Alan (Jessica) Kupstas of Atascadero; brother, Gerald Phillips of Tracy; sister, JoAnna Martino of Atascadero and 14 grandchildren. a Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2, at Chapel of the Roses, 3450 El Camino Real, Atascadero.

Richard W. Smith The Rev. Richard W. Smith, 72, of Hollister, died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2003, at St.

Louise Regional Hospital. He was born in San Jose and moved to Hollister from Crescent City in 1989. He pastored at the United Methodist Churches of Boyes Hot Springs, Discovery Bay, Auburn, Crescent City and Hollister United Methodist Church, where he retired. Following his retirement, he continued to pastor at Freedom, Watsonville, Greenfield and Soledad United Methodist Church, driving there from his residence. He was a graduate of San Francisco State University and Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, receiving his master's.

He loved the outdoors, built model airplanes and square danced. played semi-pro football in the Sacramento area. Memberships: Sons in Retirement at Hollister Airport, former member of Crescent City Rotary Club, United Methodist Men. Survivors: Wife, Linda G. Smith of Hollister; children, Jillian Morris and Sarah Morris, both of Hollister, Lesley Billigmeier of Linden, Shelley Carlton Marysville, Cindy Tuttle of West Sacramento and Richard Smith Jr.

CARMEL Mozelle 'Susie' Heilig Mozelle "Susie" Heilig, 66, of Carmel, died Friday, Dec. 26, 2003, at Hospice House in Monterey.

She was born Feb. 21, 1937, in Huntington Park and moved to Carmel in 1999. She was a business teacher in Whittier and a flight attendant and flight attendant supervisor with American Airlines in the early 1960s. She had an associate's degree from Compton Community College and bachelor's degree in business education from the University of Southern California. She was a law student at Golden Gate University.

Memberships: American Association of University Women, chairing many programs including Legislative, Sacramento Legislative days, Southern California Legislative Days and planning statewide conferences and conventions. Also Contra Costa Child Abuse Council, International Child Resource Institute, Contra Costa Family and Children's Services Advisory Committee. Survivors: Husband, Jim L. Heilig Jr. of Carmel; sons, Jim Heilig of San Francisco and Patrick Heilig of Charlotte, N.C.; daughter, Jeanne Anne Breen of Corral de Tierra; mother, Mozelle Carpenter of Hemet; and two, grandchildren.

Lydia Viola Ayers Lydia Viola Ayers, 88, of Central Point, died Dec. 19, 2003, at Rogue Valley Medical Center in Central Point after a brief illness. She was born Nov. 20, 1915, in Osage, and moved to Greenfield in 1943, living in Monterey County for 54 years before moving to Lydia Viola Ayers Central Point to be with her daughter. She was a homemaker and enjoyed traveling, quilting, reading the Bible and other books, baking pies and spending time with her family.

She taught Sunday and vacation Bible school for many years. Memberships: Greenfield Pentecostal Church, Greenfield Assembly of God Church and Assembly of God Church in Oregon. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenford Ayers, brother, Monroe West, and parents, Henry and Rusha West. Survivors: Daughters, Imogene Glau of Salinas, Peggy Steele of Anderson and Barbara (Ron) Wallace of Central Point; son, Kenneth (Wanda) Ayers of Fresno; sister, Alice Evel of Arnold, brother, Vernon (Nadine) West of Salinas; 17 grandchildren including Linda Agredano, Ryan Ayers, Heather Card, Carole Casarino, Robert Cummings, David Cummings, Andy Cummings, Tom Cummings and Lida Cummings, Cathy Fritz, Cindy Galvez, John Glau, Rhonda Koch, Debi Richards, Cyndee Rodriguez, Dinah Walker and Jerad Wallace; 34 great- grandchildren three great- great- grandchildren. Wilson Jessie S. Wilson, 87, of Hollister, died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2003, at Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital in Hollister after a lengthy illness. She was born March 16, 1916, in Chicago and had Central lived in Salinas for more than 21 years. She was a legal secretary with California State College Hayward before Jessie S.

Wilson retiring. She enjoyed playing piano, gardening and bridge and was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Memberships: Mill Valley Chapter No. 219 and Salinas Reveille Chapter No. 47 Eastern Star, Salinas YMCA and Northminster Presbyterian Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alden Wilson, daughter, Patricia Smith, and granddaughter, Lisa Brockett. ROSEVILLE Mary I. Cameron Mary I. Mary I. (Foletta) Cameron, 91, of Roseville, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, in Roseville.

She was born Sept. 7, 1912, in San Ardo and was a former longtime Salinas resident. She was a graduate of King City High School and was well-known Mary I. and loved for her Cameron work as a waitress at The Pub in Salinas for many years. Memberships: Local No.

483. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Jack, Henry, Joe, Silvy, Emil and Stanley, and sisters, Florence Blair and Rose Gentle. He was born June 14, 1968, in Watsonville, and was a lifelong resident of California. He was a sales clerk and an avid sports fan, enjoying both 49ers football and Giants baseball.

18, 1911, in Baltimore and had lived in Pacific Grove for 51 years. He was a professor of science at the Naval Postgraduate School. He was a graduate of John Hopkins University in Baltimore with a bachelor's degree and received a master's degree from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. He was an avid bridge player and golfer. Military service: U.S.

Navy during World War IL. Memberships: Cypress Community Church and former member Pacific Grove Library Board. He was preceded in death by his wife, Florence, on Dec. 12, 2003. Survivors: Nephew, Charles Potter of Pacific Grove; and two nieces and two nephews, all of Maryland.

Pierce Franklin A. Pierce, 93, of Salinas, died of natural causes Sunday, Dec. 28, 2003, in Salinas. He was born in Moore, and had lived in the Salinas area for 50 years. He was a handyman before retiring.

Survivors: Wife, Vera Mae Pierce of Salinas; children, Tommie Pierce and Jimmie Dunton, both of Salinas, and Kenneth Pierce of Anahuac, Texas; three grandchildren and six great- grandchildren. Kristina Marie Schou Kristina Marie Schou, 16, of Marina, died unexpectedly stroke Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at Stanford Medical Center in Palo Alto.

She was born March 25, 1987, in Monterey and was a lifelong Monterey Peninsula resident. She was a junior at Notre Dame High School in Salinas where she was a honor student Kristina Marie Schou with a 4.0 GPA. She was a member of the National Honor Society and participated in cross country, basketball and softball at Notre Dame. Her interests included reading, shopping, traveling and spending time with her family and friends. She will be remembered for her high spirits and giving nature.

She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Carl Schou. Survivors: Parents, Christian and Julie Schou of Marina; brother, Ryan Schou of Marina; grandparents, Deanna Palmer of Monterey, Fred J. Palmer of Sand City and Cecilia Segel of Schenectady, N.Y. and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m.

Concord Funeral chapel, 4125 Clayton Road, Concord. SALINAS LaVerne Roberta Town LaVerne Roberta Town, 81, of Salinas, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at Natividad Medical Center after a brief illness. She was born Oct. 7, 1922, in Redding.

She was a food preparer at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital for 10 years. She enjoyed craftwork being a caregiver for young children. She was preceded death by her husband of 39 years, Arthur Town, on Jan. 11, 1978. Survivors: Son, Charlie Town of Gilroy; daughter, Gay (Robert) VanRenselaar of Salinas; grandchildren, Kelly Signorotti, Kyle Town, Kristopher Town and Korey Town and seven greatgrandchildren.
