Born in Berkeley on April 14, 1921, he attended the University of California and received a diploma from the University of London. He was a U.S. Navy line officer! and aerologist in World War II, senior meteorologist with Pan American Airways Transpacific Division, registered professional engineer (civil and traffic) with the state of California and Monterey County. He was a member and twice elected chairman of the Monterey County Planning Commission. He was an enthusiastic traveler on a worldwide basis, a longtime member of the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco, and the Chester Civic Trust (United Kingdom), and was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Del Monte Forest Property Owners, the Beach Club and County Engineers Association of California, as well as being a fellow of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (U.S.) He chaired the ITE committee that developed standards for styles and uses of the reflective road markers now seen throughout the U.S.

She was a 58-year resident of Salinas and was a retired cannery worker. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Maria Ybarra. Mr. Felipe Sarmiento 80, of Salinas, died Friday, April 29, 2005, after a lengthy illness. He was at home with his family at his side. He was a field supervisor for Felipe Hansen Farms Sarmiento Sr. and a native of Edinburg, Texas.

He lived in Salinas for 42 years. Mr. Sarmiento loved to dance and barbecue. He was an avid L.A. Dodgers fan.

Soap opera creator William Joseph Bell dies at age 78 The Associated Press LOS ANGELES William Joseph Bell, an Emmy awardwinning daytime TV soap writer, producer and co-creator of "The Young and the Restless" and "The Bold and the Beautiful," has died. He was 78.

Bell died Friday from complications of Alzheimer's disease at the University of California, Los Angeles Medical Center, said Raul Rojas, publicist for Bell's TV production company. Bell's career as a TV soap writer spanned more than four decades and earned him nine Emmy awards three for his writing on "The Young and the Restless," and the rest for producing or writing "Days of Our Lives." The Chicago native got his start in 1956 as a writer on the soap "Guiding Light." A year later, he left to write for "As the World Turns." Rosary: 7 p.m. today in the Eleanor Sveinsson WASHINGTON SALINAS William R. Jobin William R. Jobin, 78, of Salinas, passed away Thursday, April 28, 2005, at Katherine Healthcare Center from complications from a stroke. Son of William and Mildred William R.

Jobin Jobin, William was born in Bethlehem, on April 2, 1927, the fourth of five children. He was raised on a small farm tending to livestock. William spent much of his early life hunting and fishing. He served in the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 82nd "Ail American" Airborne Division and was in the "Honor Guard" in Frankfort, Germany during the Occupation in 1946. Bill married Peggy Codorette in December of 1948 and moved to the San Francisco Bay Area where he sold cars.

They relocated to Gonzales in 1953 where he became the youngest car dealer in Northern California at the age of 25. He moved to Salinas in 1955 and became sales manager for Cochrane Ford (on Monterey Street), Ablett Lincoln-Mercury and Irwin Ford (on Abbott Street) and Cochrane Equipment Co. on Vertin Ave. He was retired as a manufacturer's representative for Fabco Company in Oakland, which made lettuce trucks and equipment for United Air Lines. After retirement i in 1981, often vacationed in Hawaii for several months each year and drove cross -country every few years.

Bill enjoyed gardening, big band concerts and parades and was fond of patriotic music. He was preceded in death by his older sister, Dorothea Adams. Survivors: wife of 56 years, Peggy; son, William R. Jobin III; brother, Arthur E. Jobin of Yerrington, sisters, Muriel J.

Brown of Bethlehem, N.H., and Anita J. Lopez of Reno numerous nieces and nephews. Services: Private graveside services have been held with burial at Mission Memorial Park, 1915 Ord Grove Seaside. for 28 years and enjoyed spending time with his family and his grandchildren. Survivors: wife, Helen Carranco of the family home; daughter, Eileen Bustamantes of Salinas; sons, Jose (Liz) Carranco III of Castroville, Randy Cervantez of Salinas; mother, Maria Carranco of Salinas; sisters, Linda Valdez, Margaret Fraga and Rosie Bowles, all of Watsonville, Annette Carranco of Salinas; brothers, Daniel and David Carranco of Yuma, Eleanor Sveinsson, 89, of Yakima, died in her sleep Saturday, April 30, 2005. She was born Marion Eleanor Lundstedt on Sept. 22, 1915, to George Irving Lundstedt (born in Chicago of Swedish and Norwegian descent) and Helen Lundstedt (born in Sweden). Eleanor was the eldest of triplets.

The birth of Eleanor, Harold and Mildred was featured as front page news in the Los Angeles Times. She grew up in Temple City, a suburb of Los Angeles. She graduated from Pasadena High School in 1934 and Polytech Cosmetology College in 1936. Eleanor married Johannes (Joe) Sveinsson on Oct. 31, 1938.

Joe worked for Pacific Rock and Gravel. During World War II, he was stationed in Central America, building air strips for the Army Air Corps; Eleanor spent three months in Central America to be near him. Later, they lived in Gonzales for 42 years, where Eleanor was a devoted mother and homemaker, a gardener extraordinaire and won ribbons in the fair for her afghans, knitting and crocheting. In 1992, Joe and Eleanor retired to Yakima to be near their son, Ken, and family. They became members of the 35th Avenue Seventh-Day Adventist Church of Yakima.

Memberships: Hoe and Show Garden Club; AmericanScandinavian Society; Salinas Seventh-Day Adventist Church. She held various church positions over the years, including serving as flower coordinator for 15 years; General Superintendent for a year and as a longterm choir member; Eleanor also regularly taught Bible lessons at the church. Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband, Joe, and by her siblings, Earl, Harold and Mildred. Survivors: Children, Kenneth Joel (Valerie) Sveinsson of Yakima, Joleen Helen (John) Kinney of Pooler (Savannah), Johannes Carl (Joan) Sveinsson of Plano (Dallas), Texas; sister, Lydia Weisz; grandchildren, Heather N. Sveinsson, Eric K.
