This weekend he's in contention at the BellSouth Classic, the final tuneup before the world's best golfers gather in Augusta, to play in The Masters, beginning Thursday. Mickelson shot 7-under-par 65 at the TPC at Sugarloaf, one stroke off the lead of Steve Elk-ington, who birdied six of the first eight holes Thursday and finished at 64. "I've played well in this city," said Mickelson, who won the BellSouth two years ago and finished second to David Toms in the PGA Championship at Atlanta Athletic Club last August. "Atlanta has always been good to me, going back to my days in junior golf. I don't know why.

There's no reason in particular." Mickelson is a native of Southern California and played college golf in Arizona, so the rolling hills of Georgia don't rekindle memories of his youth. Still, he plays extremely well here, although he's still searching for a victory in The Masters. He has finished sixth, seventh and third in the last three Masters. Last year he shared the lead twice on the front nine of the final round, but he ended up third behind Tiger Woods and David Duval. As part of his preparation for The Masters this week, he spent Wednesday afternoon in Athens, at the University of Georgia, practicing his short game on the school's golf course.

He said the practice area there is similar to Augusta National. "It's difficult to find an area with greens like those at Augusta," Mickelson said. "The University of Georgia is one of those places. It's in a quaint, enjoyable town. I have friends there, so it's a fun place for me." Elkington, who has 10 wins on the PGA Tour, warned that one shouldn't place too much emphasis on what happens here this weekend if the goal is to pre The Associated Press ATLANTA Reggie Miller missed a fadeaway 3-pointer at the buzzer as the Atlanta Hawks beat Indiana 95-94 Tuesday night, sending the Pacers to their firth loss in six games.

Indiana, which never led, fell into a tie with Toronto for the eighth and final Eastern Conference playoff spot. The Raptors, 2- 0 against Indiana this season, play the Pacers on Sunday at Toronto and again Wednesday in Indianapolis. Magic 105, Cavaliers 101 ORLANDO, Fla. Darrell Armstrong scored 11 of his 18 points in the final six minutes and Tracy McGrady had 35 points and 14 rebounds. Pat Garrity added 14 points and a career-high 11 rebounds for Orlando, which cut its magic number for clinching a playoff berth to four.

Spurs 102, Rockets 78 HOUSTON Tim Duncan had 22 points and 11 rebounds for his NBA-leading 61st double-double of the season as San Antonio completed a sweep of the four-game season series. David Robinson added 15 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots for the Spurs, who remained 1 12 games behind Dallas in the Midwest Division. Mavs 11 5, Clippers 90 DALLAS Dirk Nowitzki scored 25 points, including a 3-pointer that started a 15-2 fourth-quarter spurt. The Mavericks started slowly, then took their first lead just before halftime on a scooping layup by Steve Nash. They led for all but 13 seconds the rest of the way, with Nowitzki scoring 11 points in the gamebreaking third quarter when Dallas hit 65 percent of its shots.

Nuggets 88, Wolves 87 DENVER Voshon Lenard scored 15 points and hit a leaner with 11.2 seconds left as the Nuggets ended the Timber-wolves' four-game winning streak. Minnesota took an 87-83 lead after Anthony Peeler hit a pair of 3-pointers from the corner. Denver's George McCloud followed with three free throws with 34 seconds left after he was fouled on a 3-point attempt. Blazers 88, Knicks 80 PORTLAND, Ore. Rasheed Wallace scored 25 points and Dale Davis had a season-high 18 rebounds as the Trail Blazers eliminated the Knicks.
