It expected that only 16 percent of nonprofits would be able to cover operating expenses in both 2009 and 2010. "It's been hard all year," said Leslie Sunny, executive director of the Food Bank for Monterey County. Some food drive barrels that workers have retrieved came back less than full. Some have been nearly empty. "People are nervous about the recession," Sunny said.

"They are nervous. that they might get laid off, so maybe they are holding on a little bit." The recession is why the United Way will be asking residents who can to "dig a little deeper," Dias said. "We live in a very generous community," she said, echoing the words of nearly every nonprofit leader The Californian spoke with. Giving options The organization plans to launch a program to encourage residents to give donations in someone's name rather than give gifts this holiday season. The Salvation Army will ask residents to adopt a family, a child or a senior this holiday season.

The SPCA for Monterey County hopes to keep its pet food bank filled. "In the last seven weeks, we have increase of giving," said Susan Koza, director of development at the SPCA. "I am cautiously optimistic that that support will continue through the she said, despite a drop in year-over-year gifts for the first five months of the fiscal year. The food bank has seen a 25 percent increase in requests for emergency food assistance, Sunny said.

Shrinking supplies have meant shrinking food bags for families. Calls to the United Waysponsored 211 helpline have been coming faster than predicted, Dias. said. Officials expected to receive 10,000 calls on the new line by February 2010. They expect to get that call this week, four months ahead of the prediction.
