Alvarez scored in the 20th Staff reports The Palma High basketball team went double-overtime Tuesday night to beat Watsonville 78-76 in its season -opener. Watsonville fell to 3-L Palma trailed 33-25 at half-time, but a big second-half effort pulled out the win for the defending Central Coast Section Division IV champions. The Chieftains used a defensive stand at the end of regulation and another at the end of the first overtime to force another extra period.

Leading by one with eight seconds left in the second overtime, John Bonano hit two free throws to give Palma a 78-75 lead. Palma then fouled Watsonville with three seconds to play and it made one free throw, but never had another possession. Garrett Broom led Palma with 25 points 16 coming in the second half. Bonano added 24 and Clark Fox, playing in foul trouble most of the game, added 20. Fox played the entire fourth quarter and two overtimes with four fouls.

Scotts Valley 83, Gonzales 17. At Gonzales, the Spartans took the Falcons into double overtime before felling in their season-opener. Free throws hurt the Spartans, who made only 13 of 3L But Gonzales countered with eight 3-pointers to maintain the lead nearly all the way to the end. Matt Lopez topped Gonzales with 16 points, Isaiah Jimenez had 19 and Ryan Moline 16. Junior Banuelos hit three 3-pointers to finish with nine.

The game was the varsity debut for coach Anthony Gonzales. Alvarez 71, Monte Vista Christian 29: At Alvarez, the Eagles evened their non-league mark at 1-1 with the win over the Mustangs. Matt Baker and Joaquin Casareno tallied nine points and Abe Adenuga eight to lead Alvarez, which evened its record at 1-L N. County 80, Carmel 49: At Carmel, the Condors overcame an eight-point first quarter to rout the Padres in a non-league game. Michael Kim nailed five three-point goals to lead North County with 20 points.

Roger Jones added 18, Glen Gabriel 17 and Patrick Kilty added 10. Alex Pickert led Carmel with 19 points. North County trailed by three at the quarter and led by three at the half. The Condors outscored Carmel 53-28 in the second half to square their record at 1-1. North County is home Thursday to play North Salinas.

Stevenson 63, Marina 37: At Stevenson, three Pirates scored in double figures in their season opener against the first-year schooL Brian McKinney led the way with 13 points, followed by Brandon Cottle's 12 and Ken Treadwell's 10. Marina's Trey Miles had 14 points. Stevenson is scheduled to host Scotts Valley at 630 p.m. Thursday in the Coach Wilson Memorial Tournament Salinas 54, Aptos 50: At Salinas, Kyle Vasher scored a team-high 13 points for the Cowboys in their home opener.
