Whether working on a given project together, visiting a master carver's studio or undertaking an individual carving, the club members are united by their love of woodcarving.

For her, that exercise took the form of carving a small bird from wood. With a laugh, Schaechtele said her first creation would not have won any awards, but she kept at it. When she and her husband moved to the Central Coast, the Oak Hills resident took her first carving class at Hartnell College and said she became "hooked." Now, she's president of the Pacific Carvers, the Salinas chapter of the California Carvers Guild. Schaechtele was a founding member of the group and has been its leader since it was established about seven years ago.
