Friday, October 21, 2011 NEWS Salinas High School homecoming float is huge, historical 1 iT 1 i j. if a umin iiiiiiw mi i IT? Seniors use historic themes for annual parade BY GRISELDA D. RAMIREZ gramirezt hecalifornian.com Salinas High School seniors and parents gathered for a homecoming float party Thursday evening as they worked on last-minute touches on detailed scenery for "Frontierland." The float is in step with this year's homecoming theme The float embodies the expansion into the West from the Louisiana Purchase to the Gold Rush of 1849. The float has a Big Thunder Mountain, rippling river and red-and-creamed-colored ship. Seniors on the football, water polo and tennis teams have worked on the float after practices or games.

"I'm very excited," said Scarlitte Ponce, senior class vice president. "It's so unimaginable that we all got along and took our time to create this." Students riding the float will wear cowboy gear or outfits worn by saloon girls. Others will wear T-shirts that read, "Saddle up seniors, it's a wild frontier!" Class president Connor McWilliams said it took them 15 days to create what started out as a drawing by Isabel Perez. McWilliams took Isabel's drawing to an architect who laid out measurements to create the float. Between 36 to 64 seniors volunteered to build the float at 57 feet long and 14 feet high.

The materials used: wood, cardboard, tissue paper and chicken wire. It sits on a flatbed truck. "School floats don't usually exceed 27 feet long but this year we wanted to go all-out in the win," said McWilliams. The senior float will join other class floats at today's homecoming parade at 2:30 p.m. The parade starts at Sali- Salinas High School seniors wave from their homecoming class float Thursday at Stan-Moving and Storage in Salinas.

Online condolences to www.struveandlaporte.com SALINAS SAN JOSE I. i 'Ski SALINAS Scott Douglas Boone It is with great sadness that the family of Scott Douglas Bonne announces his sudden passing on Monday, September 26. 201 I.

Scott was born September 21, 1954 in Pasadena. Raised and educated in Southern California, he moved to Santa Cruz where he spent most of his adult life before making Salinas his home. Although he valued his privacy, he cherished his friendships, so we know he ill be sorely missed by many. His intellect, wit, and boyish charm endeared him to all he met. Scott's many accomplishments covered a wide array of interests and disciplines of study.

Rather than a competition with others, his natural curiosity and thirst for knowledge inspired him to challenge himself and master whatever he chose to investigate. It was that variety of knowledge and understanding of the efforts and desires of others which enabled him to communicate and find common ground with people from all walks of life. He is survived by his mother, Diane; his brother, Chris; his sisters, Kerry and Tracy; and his niece, Emily. A private family service will be held. We mourn his loss, but his spirit will continue to live in all of us.
