John Napoleon Derdivanis John Napoleon Derdivanis, 87, quietly passed away Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009, in Monterey.

Anyone who knew him will remember his brilliant humor, his quick wit, and his kind, gentle manner. John was born March 29, 1922, in Fresno, to Greek immigrant parents. He graduated from Roosevelt High School where he was class president in 1937. He continued on to Bakersfield Junior College where he was Student Body President. Along with a stint in the U.S.

Army, John attended UCLA where he majored in business and served on the Stu-, dent Council. He was a pitcher for the Bruins and was affili- ated with the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. There he met the love of his life, Bonnie Lee Roberts. John and Bonnie were married the next summer on July 2, 1947 and settled in West Los Angeles. In 1952 they moved to Salinas where John was a partner in the Armstrong Paper Company and Martin Produce.

In 1957, he and his UCLA fraternity brother, Herb Fleming, started the Admiral Packing Company. John was president of Grower-Shipper Vegetable Association of Central California 1966 and on the California Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors from 1967-1992. He was instrumental in the formation of the Central California Iceberg Cooperative, served as Western Growers Association president in 1971 as well as United Fresh Fruit Vegetable Association president in 1985. John was recognized by the Harden Memorial Heart Center in 1985 for his work in helping the Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital obtain approval from the State of California. In addition, he served on the Governor Campaign committees for Ronald Reagan, Pete Wilson, and George Deukmejian, and was a member of the Elks Club, the Salinas Jaycees, the Nite Caps, and the Jolly Rogers.

In 1960 John and Bonnie became charter members of Corral de Tierra Country Club and were avid golfers. John was a 6 handicap golfer and two-time champion of the International Golf Tournament as well as 1st Flight Club Champion at Corral de Tierra in 1964. After retirement, John played golf at least 4-5 times a week, especially in the winter when he and Bonnie would relocate to their home at PGA West in La Quinta for six months out of the year. In 1985 John and Bonnie were guests of President Mrs. Reagan at the Inaugural Ball in Washington, DC.

They traveled the world together and enjoyed spending time every year in Los Cabos, Mexico always with friends and family. John will be greatly missed but will live in our memories forever. His warm laugh will long echo in our hearts and minds until we can all be together again. Survivors: John is survived by his daughter, Kris (Ron) Munoz of Venice; son, Derek of Monterey, and son, Kent (Joette Schmidt) of Scottsdale, Ariz. He is also survived by grandsons, Matt (Jessica) and Corey of Scottsdale, grandaughters, Kyra and Cassie of Turlock, and one sister, Athena Lofaro of San Jose.

Roy Gianolini, 73, of Gonzales, passed away Monday, Dec. 7, 2009, at the Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto following an accident while team roping. Roy was born July 23, 1936, in the old Park Lane Hospital in Salinas.

He was raised on the family ranch in Greenfield. Roy graduated from Greenfield Grammar School and King City High with the Class of 1954. He attended Cal Poly for one year before serving two years in the U.S. Army, stationed in Georgia. He returned home and ranched with his father, brother and his special friend, Jim Caraccioli.

He ran cattle in the Arroyo Seco on the family Basin ranch. For the past 12 years he had been working for Bryan Equipment Co. in Gonzales. In 1967 Roy attended Auctioneer's school in Mason City, Iowa and began auctioneering as a side-line. Over the last 42 years he has served as auctioneer at hundreds of auctions throughout the area.

In 1968 Roy married Ginger Brinan of San Ardo. Together they raised two daughters, Carla and Jeanie. Since childhood Roy has enjoyed drawing. He was well-known for his witty, country cartoons. His passion was Team Roping.

In 1961 he joined RCA and in the early sixties he and the late Joe Mattos team roped together throughout the state. He was a lifetime member of the P.R.C.A. Until his passing he was still roping several times a week. Survivors: Roy is survived by his wife of 41 years, Ginger of Gonzales; daughters, Carla Harrison of Soper, Jeanie Grainger of Soledad; his special son-in-laws, John Harrison and Justin Grainger; the delight of his life, his only grandchild, Addy Harrison; brother, Jim of King City; aunts and uncles, Rosamond and Ed Gianolini of Paso Robles, Amelia and Pete Tognazzini of Cayucos, Marion Udell of Prescott Valley, many wonderful nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews. He also leaves five special godchildren, Jaimie Brown, Katie Gianolini, Pete Tognazzini Audra Vaccarezza and Barbara Varian.
