Along with his desire for on-the-job-safety, as well as life safety, he was instrumental in starting the Monterey Industrial Safety Society, serving as president whenever the need arose. When the Army Air Corps received his resume, they had better plans for him. He was sent without basic training to Boston to board the Queen Mary, which at that time was a troop carrier. He served in the Adjutant General's Office, headquarters squadron of the 5th Air Force, in Australia under Gen. George MacArthur. When his orders to pilot school teaming came in, transfers were not available.

Joe was active in the Air Force Reserve's Civil Air Patrol, retiring with his wings and the rank of lieutenant colonel in 1970. He was in charge of and flew hundreds of search and rescue operations for lost airplanes and people in the tri-county area. Memberships: Joe was a 65- Joseph, (JC), was born there. They returned to Salinas in the fall of 1948. He worked for many automobile garages located there.

He became well-known for his excellent body and fender repair work and was asked to join the Salinas Rural Fire Department in 1950. He served in the various ranks of the S.RF.D. While at Salinas Rural he started working part-time with one of the officers of the fire department at his Fire Extinguisher Service and Recharging Company. In 1955 he started his own fire extinguisher service company in Hollister and later purchased the company in Salinas. He continued with the fire department until his business had grown to be a full-time commitment.

He retired in 1986 after 31 years. Carton's Fire continues today with Maria Carton Holliday and her husband, John, at the helm. Joe stressed fire prevention and education He trained thousands of individuals throughout the area on the use of fire equipment. The highlight of his training career was giving personal live fire extinguisher training to Miss Doris Day at her home in Carmel Valley. After his retirement from Carton's Fire, he took organ les Maureen Stapleton was also a graduate of Hartnell College.
