Corrections run on this page. Thomas Hansen Tarp, a 3rd generation California farmer and rancher, was born in Salinas, October 16, 1926 and passed away May 5, 2017. He was 90 years old. Tom was the son of Thomas Hansen Tarp and Elena (Hansen) Tarp. His grandparents came to California in 1868 from Langeland and Sonder Bjert, Denmark, and started farming in Old Natividad off Old Stage Road, Harris Road and at Deep Wells, near Gonzales.

father continued the family farming tradition in Gonzales and Hunter Lane where the farm is still in family production. Tom was preceded in death by his high school sweetheart, Patsy Ann (Simas) Tarp. She was his one and only, and the most beautiful and special woman in his life, to whom he was married for 61 years. They traveled to Tahiti, Mexico, Alaska, Canada and many Western States, always with a fishing pole and an eye out for a good restaurant. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Arline Tarp Works; brother-in-law, Bob Works; sister-in-law, Jeanne, and brother-in-law, Armin Neubert.

Tom Tarp leaves behind sons, William (Kathleen), Brad (Rosemary), Alan (Diane), and six grandchildren, Jody (Lenny) Tarp-Braasch, Bradley Tarp Paul (Julie) Tarp, Elissa (Joseph) Dana, Kyle (Rachel) Tarp, and Shayla (Cory) Hoffman. Tom was also blessed to have six great-grandchildren, Ross, Riley, Avery, Trenton, Ella, and Kathryn. Surviving relatives include special niece, Dianne Works Geiger; his loving cousin, Sharon (Mike) Richardson, the Woodworth Family of the Bay Area and nephews, Rod (Susan) and Bryan (Patty) Neubert and niece, Karla Neubert Silva. Tom worked at the family farm on Hunter Lane until age 18. He then began his professional produce career working for his father-in-law, Bill Simas, at Triangle Fertilizer Co.

He started in the warehouse and eventually was in charge of fertilizer sales. Later in his career he managed the farm operations for Interharvest, The Garin J.R. Norton and as a partner in Tarp Bros. Farms. entire life was dedicated to ranching and farming.

He farmed from Brentwood, Salinas, Bakersfield, Oxnard, El Centro, Yuma, to Phoenix and back again. There were days cover thousands of acres, in two states, overseeing crops from broccoli to head lettuce to potatoes to strawberries. His planting schedule was on a yellow tablet that needed revision by hand each time it rained. He also managed the family strawberry and cattle operation. Just weeks before his death he was still managing the family ranch.

One of his great adventures was in 1963. Tom was part of a local group of farmers, which included Hugo Tottino, his high school classmate and good friend. They visited Russia, during the height of the Cold War on a to trip. They traveled in Russia for 7 days at farms near Leningrad, Moscow, and Tbilisi. They also visited farms near Belgium, London, Bulgaria, Vienna and Rome.

Tom was the Past Exalted Ruler of the Salinas Elks Lodge He was an officer as the new Elks Club was built and Exalted Ruler for its Grand Opening in 1965. struveandlaporte.com Thomas Hansen Tarp Jr. Oct. 16, 1926 May 5, 2017 SALINAS Joanne Hartzell Mattison passed away peacefully Monday, May 8, 2017, with her family by her side. She was 89 years old. She was born in Cayucos, CA.

Joanne graduated from Hospital Nursing School in San Francisco. She lived her life as a nurse to care for others, for giving was her greatest joy. She loved everything about the ocean, and shared that love with her husband of 57 years. Together they kayaked, fished, photographed and dove into many oceans around the world. They lived in Salinas from 1958 until 2008 when she moved to Visalia to live with her daughter, Dorothea Mattison Meis for six years before moving to Quail Park Retirement Village.

Joanne was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. James A. Mattison. Joanne will be greatly missed by her oldest son, Richard and his wife Cheryl, who were instrumental in caring for her, along with Dorothea and her husband Steve, and her son, John and his wife, Mindy. She will also be missed by all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

There will be a permanent hole in the hearts of all those who loved her immensely. However, she taught each of them the most beautiful lessons in life, and they will always carry her with them. In lieu of flowers, please make donations payable to The Covenant House, 1325 N. Western Hollywood, CA 90027-5615, for homeless children. This was a charity close to her heart.

The memorial service will be at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, May 21, 2017, at Quail Park, 4520 W. Cypress Visalia. Her ashes will be spread at sea by the family in Monterey Bay where she and her children laughed and played all of their lives. Joanne Hartzell Mattison May 8, 2017 VISALIA Agnes C.

Bryce, 91, of Salinas, passed away peacefully April 13, 2017, at the Katherine Convalescent Hospital. Born June 29, 1924 in Germany, she came to the United States as a young girl and lived in New York, where she met and married her beloved husband, George F. Bryce (deceased Their lives together in the U.S. Army took them across the world, living in Europe, Alaska, Arizona, and finally to California. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her son, John Y. Bryce; daughter- in-law, Kim M. Bryce, and grandchildren, Lauren M. Bryce and Spencer G. Bryce, all of Salinas.

Private services have been held and she was laid to rest at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery. Agnes C. Bryce June 29, 1924 April 13, 2017 SALINAS Elaine Rodriguez, a longtime Salinas resident, died May 11 after a lengthy illness. She was 86. Mrs.

husband, Henry Rodriguez preceded her in death three months earlier. Mrs. Rodriguez was born in Aberdeen, South Dakota, to Andrew and Helen Kraft, who were teachers. Her father died when she was young and her mother remarried a career military man, Wyatt B. Wood, who adopted her.

The family, which included three sisters twins Marilyn and Carolyn and Billie Rae was transferred to Fort Ord and Mrs. Rodriguez spent the rest of her life in the area. Elaine Wood, as she was known in school, attended Spreckels School and later graduated from Salinas High School in 1949 where she was an outstanding student and a gifted athlete. She met her future husband on a blind date and the couple was married for more than 66 years. Always a stylish dresser, Mrs.

Rodriguez worked in sales of clothing and was the manager of Vogue dress shop on Main Street for several years. A natural and gifted teacher, Mrs. Rodriguez had hoped to follow her parents into teaching. She used her patience, intelligence and skills to lovingly teach and mentor her two sons, Hank Jr. and Rick, inspiring them to go to college and enjoy successful careers.

Hank who preceded her in death in 2006, was a longtime counselor at Gonzales High School, and Rick is the former executive editor of The Sacramento Bee newspaper who is now a professor at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University. One of the great joys of Mrs. life was the birth of her grandchildren in 2012, triplets Ella, Erickson and Ryan Rodriguez to her daughter-in-law Emelyn and son Rick, who reside in Sacramento. In addition to her son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren, Mrs. Rodriguez is survived by her sister, Carolyn Yeager of Gig Harbor, WA; nephews, Leonard Halcon (Angie) of Salinas and Woody Juarez of Washington; nieces, Celia Perez Martinez (Raul); Felicia Perez Kausin (Ray), all of Salinas, and Ludavina Lapineg of Greenfield; brother-in- law, David Perez of Salinas; and numerous great- nephews and nieces.

A Memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 20, 2017, at the Alta Vista Mortuary, 41 E. Alisal in Salinas. She was 67 years old. Mary was born Dec. 8, 1949 to Stanley and Helen Vilcone in San Diego County.

Stanley was aboard the USS Maryland and tried to steer the battleship out of Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7th. Her mother, Helen, was a nurse during WWII serving in North Africa and France. She received two bronze stars for valor. grew up on the Monterey Peninsula attending local schools.

She graduated from Junipero High School in 1968. She first trained at a beauty college (she was always a great barber for the family) and later attended Monterey Peninsula business career was long and varied. She fell in love with radio. Mary started in the traffic department scheduling commercials at KIDD. She spent more than 20 years in local radio as business manager for KWAV, classical KBACH, and eventually as a co- owner of KMBY-FM.

She remained on the peninsula until she married Hank Hill and moved to Salinas in 1996. In Salinas, she worked as an independent bookkeeper and was a founding partner of Abundant Personal Care. She worked there from 2002-2009. After working at Abundant she again operated an independent bookkeeping and business consultantship until her passing. Mary served as treasurer for Camerata Singers for many years.

She enjoyed live classical music whether it was choral or orchestra. She hardly missed a performance of the Monterey County Symphony. Mary was a member of the Salinas Police Civilian Advisory Committee and a 2012 graduate of the Salinas Police Community Academy. She is survived by her husband of 21 years, Henry (Hank) Hill; children, Bonnie Matthews of Texas, Cory Matthews of Colorado, and grandchildren, Shawn, Regan, Gavin, and Mackenzie. She was preceded in death by her parents, Stan and Helen Vilcone, and her brothers, Steve and Dennis Vilcone.

Mary will always be remembered for her immense kindness to others, delightful sense of humor and love of Ireland. Even while sick, Mary and Hank made a birthday trip to her beloved Ireland. They enjoyed many trips to Ireland always stopping in Shanagolden, the birthplace of her great-great- grandfather.
