753-6045. SHOWGIRLS: Elizabeth Berkley and Kyle MacLachlan star in the racy Showgirls. Opens today at Northridge 8 NC-17 By Jack Garner Gannett News Service Director Paul Verhoeven and writer Joe Eszterhas learned an important lesson in 1992, when they made Basic Instinct: People wont talk about a films convoluted plot if you distract them with a Sharon Stone crotch shot. Theyre taking that lesson all the way to the bank in Showgirls, a cynical sex-ploitation flick that blankets a stupid, hackneyed story and truly awful acting with an endless parade of bare breasts and butts and, yes, an occasional crotch shot. Showgirls, in fact, has earned the NC-17 adults-only rating that most filmmakers dread.

Verhoeven and United Artists, however, have embraced it. After all, if you cant sell this particularly bad piece of steak, perhaps you can sell the sizzle. Showgirls finds Eszterhas regurgitating the story he originally wrote for Flashdance, the surprise 1983 hit with Jennifer Beals as a young steelworker who dreams of making it as a dancer. And the film asks the standard question found in all stories about ambition: Is the person willing to sell their souls to find success? The same plot and question resurfaces in Showgirls, but the new films got less dance and more flash. In Showgirls, Nomi Malone (Elizabeth Berkley) is an uninhibited young woman with a mysterious past who tries to hoof her way to glory in Las Vegas.

Nomi starts her career as a stripper and lap dancer the bottom rung of the ladder at a sleazy Vegas club. But her ambition is to dance in one of the splashier shows at one of the Strips more spectacular casinos. She gets her break when she catches Showgirls marks the feature debut of Elizabeth Berkeley, an attractive but stilted actress with some TV experience (Saved by the Bell). She certainly passes the physical for the films many nude scenes, but her gestures and expressions are all too expansive and undisciplined. She flings her arms about with wild abandon, and often carries a wide-eyed look that seldom seems justified.

As her more experienced rival, Gina Gershon offers a bit more maturity and subtlety; hers is one of the films few tolerable portrayals. The film does little to redeem itself on a technical level the choreography by Marguerite Pomerhn-Derricks depends far too much on windmill hand gestures and posturing, the music by David A. Stewart (of the Euryth-mics) offers little but sledgehammer rhythms, and the cinematography of Jost Vacano is overly dark and not especially imaginative. the eye of Zack Carey, the casinos entertainment director (Kyle MacLachlan), and Cristal Conners (Gina Gershon), the star dancer at the casino. Both find their libidos stirred by the sexy, long-legged Nomi, and would each like to do more with her than put her in the chorus line.

Nomis best friend, Molly (Gina Ravera) smells a rat, and tries to help Nomi take the moral high ground. (However, such ground is a relative thing in this world of T-and-A.) Placed strategically throughout this familiar story are a variety of Vegas strip dances and topless chorus lines, along with several sexual encounters that try to touch all the bases heterosexual, homosexual and interracial. (The nudity, however, is almost strictly female. Kyle MacLachlan contributes a from-the-rear butt shot, but thats the extent of male nudity.) and 2:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
